I went in searching for frozen empanada dough, and Aji Amarillo. The former was easy enough to find (thank you, Goya), but even my Peruvian American friend from Chicago warned me that it's hard to find the Hot Yellow Peppers, critical to the Aji de Gallina dish from her native country that I wanted to make. And sure enough, I couldn't find it after walking all through the store! La Tapatia staff to the rescue: Through a mix of English, Spanish, and pointing-to-pictures-on-my-phone -- the staff made it a mission to help me find the Aji Amarillo. Turns out, La Tapatia had it in paste, in brine, and frozen! Can't wait to come back! ”

Stores like this are all over the place in LA, and I really believed that that was a part of my life that was just gone for me once moving to Iowa. Enter La Tapatia! I did a google search for "homemade tortillas" in the hopes of finding a restaurant that had them. I came across La Tapatia. I wasn't familiar with the area, so I plugged it into maps, and set off. First thing, I DIED LAUGHING, legit tears, because the fembot voice reading my route aloud via my phone spit out, "Starting route to, La Tuh Pay Shuh, Market..." This set in stone what this place in now called by everyone in my house, despite the fact that we all know better. La Tuh Pay Shuh for life! Anyway, literally everything is good here. Their hot deli area has insane carnitas and tamales. The cold deli has bonkers ceviche, and three different kinds of it! Their homemade tortillas are excellent. Their panaderia is extensive and awesome and I love it so much. Oh, and they have an entire aisle of Mexican candy!!! Give me all the lead, I don't even care. If you haven't been here, you're missing out! ”
